Nutcombe Tower is one such grand design, which takes – and savours – a former agricultural building, and present it as a modern Nutcombe Tower is a light, airy property offering the best in creative modern design in an idyllic rural setting, making it a particularly picturesque retreat for film and photo shoots.

Originally a grain store, the tower served the adjoining farm from the late 1940s to the 1980s when it was purchased by a couple, two employees of the BBC, who had an eye for the unique and the ambition for an architectural challenge.

Owners Sam D’Lacey and partner set about creating a home over three floors, connected by a staircase that wraps around the inside of the tower. They kept the grain shoot, which is still seen today at the entrance, and new openings were made in the external walls to create the required window and doors.

The first stage of the property’s new lease of life remained until 2013/14 before further extensive work was undertaken to transform the property in to the photogenic location it is today. Sam explained the process of stage 2 to us, emphasising the desire to sympathetically marry the outdoor landscape with contemporary interior design:

‘The priority was to enhance the building whilst making sure it still sat comfortably within the landscape, like it had always been that way.’

‘To extend it at ground floor level meant careful excavation of the bank which the existing tower nestled within, in order to create an extension which radiates out from the centre point of the tower.’

This is was no small feat. The due care that was taken to ensure these picturesque results took over two years and a lot of careful drilling, drainage, and digging.

The result was an extended living area that enabled the incredible views of the Hampshire landscape surrounding the property. To top it all, the crowing glory of the house is a 360 degree view on the 4th floor.

As a film and photographic location, Nutcombe Tower cuts some unique shapes across our library. The clean lines, ample space and practicalities such as good parking and other mod cons make the tower an attractive option for those seeking something high-end and unusual.
