How to become a Creation Catalyst

Shaking up suburbia with Hengrave

Shaking up suburbia with Hengrave

‘Hengrave’ is one of the beautiful homes hand-picked by our team to be exclusively represented by jj Locations. Striking a chord with the creative industry’s demand for visually arresting and bespoke modern properties, Hengrave introduces industrial elements such as poured concrete, substantial expanses of glass and edgy angles to a softer, domestic setting.

The property is located on a quiet street in suburban south east London, a few paces away from Honor Oak Overground station. From the front the house is like many ’30s/’40s builds propping up the sprawl of London. However, step inside and anyone with an eye for photography, or an appreciation of how to win at converting an ‘everyday’ home, will realise that this shoot location is special.

With the traditional facade of the property now behind you, the light and space served up by the renovation is immediately apparent. Warm  (literally and visually) stripped back floorboards lead you towards the open plan accomplishment of the extended rear of the house. An expanse of on-trend concrete flooring, white walls, warm wooden units and floor-to-ceiling windows throw orderly, design-savvy shapes across the space contributing to a desirable, social living space in the heart of the house.

Complimenting the bares bones architectural feat is the selection of furniture and ornamentation. Amy, co-owner of Hengrave, who is an artist and art teacher, balances carefully placed furniture with the right amount of vintage wares to make the property homely. Amy, over many years, has assembled a carefully selected stock of retro and decorative items throughout the house. Items on display includes Amy’s Sindy furniture from her own childhood which now rest on the top shelves in the children’s bedroom, 1950s Festival of Britain-style glassware in the kitchen and artwork by her own father which plays a significant role in the artistic affection felt throughout the house.

Practically speaking, the house is a resourceful location for many photographers and content makers. The aforementioned windows at the rear of the property provide lots of natural light across the ample space. The kitchen’s island has a gas hob situated on a sturdy concrete unit (a not-insignificant plus point for many cookery demos), this is surrounded by cupboards that provide a warm, matt texture making the backdrop interesting and easy to light (another element praised by film and photography crews). There’s room for colorama, an off road park space for unloading equipment and props, a ground floor toilet and rooms that can be used for hair and make-up; all essential elements that help to support crews shooting on location.

Hengrave is a house that Amy states ‘will never be quite finished’ as she’s always on the lookout for new and exciting props. In addition to this, the garden will soon be transformed with some handsome outbuildings to further whet the appetite of photography crews and filmmakers… quite literally as one of the outbuildings will contain a kitchen fully equipment for al-fresco entertaining! We will of course be keeping our clients up to date with these exciting changes when the time comes. In the meantime, Hengrave is shoot ready and the owners are looking forward to hosting more shoots in their designer home.
